After Covid-19

. So what now?  As I write this the Coronavirus Pandemic is still progressing throughout our communities  as everyone struggles to balance their lives between safety and unknown risk. As business owners we are faced with challenging obstacles, how do you reopen your businesses and encourage commerce while mitigating the risk to your employees and other customers. Following the CDC recommendations should help manage that risk but these practices are not feasible  long term, so how do we as business owners manage risk after Covid 19?
Sick employees and loss of productivity cost the  American economy 225 billion dollars per year before Covid-19.  We could easily expect that number to increase after the pandemic as employers and employees alike are more aware of the the dangers and transmissible viruses that have traditionally invaded our labor force reducing our productivity and profitability.  You should expect more call ins and employees staying home when feeling ill.  However there are things we can do to help reduce those sick days and losses.

There are areas that we can make a few changes to and drastically reduce the likelihood of transmission of costly germs and viruses.
1. Restrooms. The ideal restroom would be equipped with no touch dispensers for your soaps and paper towels, automatic water faucets and auto flushing toilets however we know this may sometimes get costly remodeling multiple restrooms. If remodeling is not in your budget automatic soap dispensers are relatively inexpensive. We also have available to our customers soap dispensers that have Bio Cote technology built into the dispensers. This prevents bacteria and germs from living  on the surface of the dispensers. We provide those dispensers free of charge.  Using  a multi-fold towel is our recommended drying process.  Multi-fold towels are inexpensive and are easily dispensed without having to touch any portion of the dispenser or other towels.

2. Breakrooms. Most work places have breakrooms or kitchenette areas that employees use for a variety of activity. These can also be great places for bacteria and germs to hide and thrive.  You can start by offering individually wrapped or dispensed cutlery rather than a cup full of spoons sitting out open. Cutlery, plates, and items that will be communally used by all employees may be better replaced with individually wrapped items, Salt pepper and sugar containers replaced with packets. Provide wipes that can be used to clean tables and counters by employees throughout the day.

3. General sanitation.  Regardless if you use a cleaning service, on staff janitors  or your cleaning your office areas yourself training and education is the key. Know how to use the chemicals you have chosen and adhere to proper dwell times and follow label directions.  Make sure your wiping all the high frequency touch points like door, microwave,  and refrigerator handles.  telephones and copier machine buttons, snack machine and water cooler buttons are all high frequency touch points that should be regularly wiped down.   Use liners in all waste cans and don' t over fill them. You want to avoid used facial tissues  from contacting the bare can inadvertently contaminating the individual who dumps the trash. You want that liner to be able to be picked up out of the can and disposed of without any unnecessary contact with its contents.

These are just a few things we can all easily do and do rather inexpensively to help slow the rate of infection not just during the Covid 19 pandemic but in life afterward Covid 19. Although the regular cold and flu season is something that we just expect to come around every year we can still take these simple steps to mitigate it's impact to our bottom line.
